Locations
When deciding the scope of the Animals on the Edge project, the earth was segmented into five principal geographic regions, listed below. Along with a description of each region and its primary habitats, a list of endangered species dwelling in that region is also given. This list is none-exhaustive and reflects some but not all of the prime species covered by the project.
North America, Mesoamerica and South America
Geography:
Includes the arctic and Greenland, Canada and the USA, and all of the Central and South American countries.
Key Habitats:
From arctic in the high North to temperate forest, desert and tropical forest (rainforest).
Iconic "On the Edge" species:
Florida and eastern cougar (puma), red wolf, sea otter, steller sea lion.
Other "On the Edge" species:
include pronghorn, Texas ocelot, bighorn sheep, peary caribou, island fox, monkeys, tamarins, maned three-toed sloth, huillin, Andean cat, giant Brazillian otter and tapirs.
Europe and northern Asia
Geography:
includes Iceland, the Scandinavian countries, all of Europe and Russia.
Key Habitats:
mixed forest and steppe plains
Iconic "On the Edge" species:
Iberian lynx, European bison, Amur leopard, Amur (Siberian) tiger and snow leopard.
Other "On the Edge" species:
chamois, grey seal, European mink, saiga antelope, Russian saiga, dhole, sea otter, stellar sea lion
North and sub-Saharan Africa
Geography:
includes the North, West, Central, East and Southern African countries, including the island of Madagascar.
Key Habitats:
range from tropical to sub-arctic. Primarily desert and arid in the North; savannah plains and dense rainforest in Central and Southern Africa. Also sahel and steppe.
Iconic "On the Edge" species:
: black rhinoceros, gorillas, African wild dog, chimpanzees, bonobos, northwest African cheetah, Ethiopian wolf, north African leopard
Other "On the Edge" species:
: addax, lemurs, giant sable antelope, colobus monkeys, guenons, monkeys, zebras, pygmy hippopotamus, crested genet, mountain nyala, gazelles, north African serval.
Middle East, south-west, central and east Asia
Geography:
includes Turkey, the Middle-eastern countries, Asian countries bordering Russia to the north and as far south as Pakistan and China. Also Japan.
Key Habitats:
desert, arid and semi arid, forest, grasslands, mountains, and steppes.
Iconic "On the Edge" species:
Amur leopard, Amur (Siberian) tiger, south China tiger, giant panda, Asian elephant, snow leopard, Arabian oryx, Asiatic lion, great Indian rhinoceros.
Other "On the Edge" species:
: bactrian camel, sikas, gibbons, Javan rhinoceros, saiga antelope, langurs, red panda, dhole, sea otter, steller sea lion, tibetan antelope, Asiatic cheetah, south Arabian leopard, anatolian leopard, north Persian leopard, Baluchistan bear, nubian ibex.
South and south-east Asia, and Oceania
Geography:
includes India, all countries south of China, including all of Malaysia, the Philippines, Indonesia, the South Pacific islands, Australia and New Zealand.
Key Habitats:
temperate, tropical and sub-tropical forest, desert, mountains.
Iconic "On the Edge" species:
Sumatran tiger, Bengal tiger, Sumatran orangutan, Bornean orangutan, snow leopard, proboscis monkey, Asian elephant, Sri Lankan leopard, great Indian rhinoceros.
Other "On the Edge" species:
sikas, Sumatran rhinoceros, gibbons, macaques, Asiatic lion, Javan rhinoceros, langurs, malabar civet, red panda, Asian buffalo, Bornean bay cat, dhole, otter civet, loris, Javan leopard, northern hairy-nosed wombat.
